In simple words, Safety Statement is your Company Safety Management System. This is the document that outlines how you manage health and safety in your workplace.
Safety statement is a requirement of Section 20 of 2005 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act:
`Every employer shall prepare or cause to be prepared, a written statement... based on the identification of the hazards and the risk assessment... specifying the manner in which the safety and welfare at work of his or her employees shall be secured and managed`.
Every safety statement should specify:
- The hazards identified and the risks assessed;
- The protective and preventive measures taken and the resources provided for protecting safety, health and welfare at the place of work to which the safety statement relates;
- The plans and procedures to be followed and the measures to be taken in the event of an emergency;
- The duties of employees regarding safety, health and welfare at work;
- The names and job titles of all personnel responsible for performing tasks assigned to him or her pursuant to the safety statement;
- The arrangements made regarding the appointment of safety representatives and consultation with employees;
Safety statement should be brought to the attention of employees at least annually and following its amendment.
