Use and Care of Personal Protective Equipment

Duration:

  • Half-a-day

Number of Participants:

  • Maximum 15

Introduction:

Under the current health and safety law "an employer should provide protective clothing free of charge for use in the work place, as well as training in how to use it"

Where Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required, it must be selected both for suitability and user acceptability in consultation with employees based on risk assessment.

Chapter 3 of 2007 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations requires that:

  • Where risks at a place of work to the safety and health of employees cannot be avoided or sufficiently limited by technical means, PPE is provided;
  • PPE provided complies with relevant European Community Directives regarding design and manufacture off PPE with respect to safety and health;
  • Before choosing any PPE, an assessment is undertaken to determine whether such equipment satisfies the requirements of Regulations;
  • Where it is necessary for an employee to use PPE, the employer shall determine the conditions of use of such equipment;
  • An employer shall ensure that PPE is used only for the purposes specified;
  • An employer provides employees with adequate information and training on the correct use and care of PPE.

This training session will be tailored to the requirements of your Organisation and will be based on the types of PPE provided to your employees. Training will be designed to include detail on when and why PPE is necessary, the type of PPE necessary, how to don/doff/adjust and wear PPE, details on the limitations of PPE and the proper use, storage, maintenance and disposal of PPE. Training will also cover inspection of PPE for wear or damage.

A typical training session includes the following modules:

  • Connection between hazard and PPE;
  • Familiarity with the Company PPE;
  • Explain why PPE is necessary;
  • Learn how the PPE works and what it is designed to protect against;
  • Know the limitations of PPE;
  • How to inspect PPE;
  • When to replace PPE.

This course will be tailored to your Company needs and will cover all PPE used by your staff.
