Manual Handling Risk Assessments

Introduction:

One third of all workplace injuries reported to the Health and Safety Authority are manual handling related.

The manual handling risk assessment process should ideally be completed at the design stage of a project so that efforts can be made at that stage to put appropriate measures in place to eliminate potential risk factors. Where this is not possible, the Employer must get a competent person to assess any risks posed by manual handling.

A typical manual handling risk assessment process involves the following steps:

  • Task observation and description;
  • Task data collection;
  • Identification of risk factors;
  • Solution development and action plan;
  • Periodic review of effectiveness of control measures.

Manual handling risk assessment will considerably reduce the risk of an injury and will ensure your Company compliance with provisions of 2005 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act and 2007 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations.
