Safe Stacking of Pallets

A UK plastics manufacturer has been recently fined GBP 140,000 for a fatal accident in their depot in Rochdale. A cleaner was killed when a pallet containing 55 bags of polypropylene weighing nearly one and a half tonnes fell on him.

It is believed that one of the bags had split causing the stack to become unstable. The pallets were double stacked, which was a dangerous practice for the material in question. The guidance from manufacturer warned against double-stacking of pallets in an outdoor environment. This was clearly ignored resulting in a fatality.

This tragic event raises the importance of safe storage of materials. Some materials can be safely double- or sometimes triple-stacked, however a risk assessment must always be conducted by a competent person to justify such practice.
