Fire Safety: Reduce the Risk of Arson

Arson is one of the most serious fire risks for any company.

Many arsons occur each week, resulting in property damage, injuries and even fatalities. The owner of the premises has a legal duty to complete fire risk assessment and be in possession of current Fire Certificate.

These are some of indirect costs of arson: business interruption, loss of jobs, loss of suppliers, environmental damage, loss of reputation, etc.

Points to consider:

  1. Assess “weak” areas of your building where you think arsonists may get in and protect such areas;
  2. Ensure that your security measures are up-to-date: strong fences, walls, gates, good quality locks, CCTV operational, etc;
  3. Keep empty packaging, pallets, etc well away from the building or in metal bins;
  4. Ensure that your fire detection and fire protection equipment is operational;
  5. Keep a record of key holders.
